A Momentous Year For Munchkin -
2024 sees a fan favorite go from strength to strength

When Munchkin first debuted in 2001, it was unlike any other game on the market. Its central premise – kill the monsters, steal the treasure, stab your buddy – satirized tabletop roleplaying power gamers and allowed boardgame enthusiasts to add some lighthearted chaos to their game nights. The result? A modern classic that has sold millions of copies worldwide.

Munchkin and its iconic characters have been featured in comics, coloring books, licensed apparel, gaming accessories, and more. But in 2024, Munchkin saw even greater success thanks to three exciting touchstones that thrilled fans and newcomers alike. A collector’s edition, numerous expansions, and a successful collaboration with a fellow game publisher showed that the future is bright for this flagship property.

Munchkin Big Box: An Amazing Anthology

In March 2024, GAMA Expo attendees were greeted by a new sight at the Steve Jackson Games booth: a box art image of Munchkin mascot Spyke facing off against a red dragon. The illustration was a loving tribute to a classic tabletop RPG, and it heralded a new project – Munchkin Big Box, a collector’s edition of Munchkin featuring over 700 cards illustrated by John Kovalic (including 50 brand-new cards) and a wide range of gameplay accessories including illustrated card dividers, a gameboard and sideboard, six dice in different colors, two Kill-O-Meters, a rulebook, and more. Even the packaging was unique – Munchkin Big Box was created for fans, so the box was designed to hold up to 2,000 cards and accessories.

The response to the Munchkin Big Box announcement was astonishing. Coverage appeared in Forbes, TechRaptor, and ICv2, as well as on streaming channels such as Good Time Society. Fans took to social media to discuss the project and watch interviews with Munchkin designers and artists. Some even shared memories of their favorite Munchkin moments with friends, family, or celebrities. The response proved that the game is still going strong over 20 years after its first release.

Munchkin Expansions: Keeping Things Fresh For Fans

One of Munchkin’s unique selling points is its wide assortment of expansion packs. Designed to be shuffled into base games, these expansion packs introduce new monsters, weapons, bonuses, and other elements, ensuring that gameplay stays fresh from one game night to the next. In 2024, Steve Jackson Games released seven expansions for Munchkin, each of which brought new punny humor to the tabletop classic.

The first quarter of 2024 saw the release of two Munchkin expansions – Munchkin Snakes, illustrated by Lar deSouza, and Munchkin Rats, illustrated by Len Peralta. Each set featured 30 cards focused on their respective themes. Two more animal-themed expansions were released in the summer of 2024. Len Peralta returned to the drawing board for the horse-themed Munchkin Pony Excess, while Bas Goverde’s illustrations brought insect puns to life in Munchkin: The Floor Is Larva. Each of these 56-card expansions allowed players to add equestrian and entomological humor to their base Munchkin deck.

The latter half of 2024 saw the release of three additional expansions – Munchkin: Taken for Granite was illustrated by John Kovalic and introduced golems to the game, while Munchkin: Dead & Deader (illustrated by Bas Goverde) gave players more options for adding undead mayhem to their Munchkin table. The final expansion for 2024 was Munchkin Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Dire Domains, an expansion for the Munchkin Warhammer Age of Sigmar base game illustrated by John Kovalic. Each 2024 expansion received a warm welcome from fans and helped showcase Munchkin’s replay value.

Munchkin Shadowrun: Creating A Successful Collaboration

Steve Jackson Games also worked with Catalyst Game Labs on a new, stand-alone version of Munchkin based on a beloved tabletop roleplaying setting – Munchkin Shadowrun. Designers from Steve Jackson Games worked closely with their Catalyst counterparts to ensure that the game’s concept – and jokes – accurately reflected the Shadowrun universe. Their combined efforts led to a game that honors both franchises and successfully blends Munchkin’s humor with the cyberpunk setting of the classic TTRPG – and fans have taken notice.

Munchkin Shadowrun generated a significant amount of buzz during its sneak peek at Gen Con 2024, as well as its convention debut at PAX Unplugged in early December. Both Munchkin and Shadowrun fans praised the setting, artwork, humor, and the new Matrix track mechanic that offers an alternate win condition. They were also impressed by the fact that the game remained accessible despite the in-jokes and references – Munchkin fans didn’t need deep knowledge of Shadowrun lore to enjoy the humor, and Shadowrun enthusiasts would enjoy the game even if they weren’t initially familiar with Munchkin’s gameplay. It’s further proof that tabletop game fans are receptive to creative partnerships between boardgame companies, which is good news for players and designers alike.

What’s Next: Munchkin in 2025 And Beyond

Enthusiasm for Munchkin continues to grow nearly 25 years after its first release. As the tabletop boardgame market continues to expand, more and more players are discovering the game and including it as an essential part of their collection. So, what’s next for the franchise? Fans can expect more expansions for their favorite stand-alone versions of the game and some additional surprises in the run-up to Munchkin’s silver jubilee in 2026. In the meantime, players can continue delighting in the dungeon-delving chaos that sets this fan favorite apart from other tabletop games. After all, even with millions of copies sold and billions of monsters slain, the adventure is far from over.
