GTM #212 - Gruff Gets Your Goat!
by Brent Critchfield

Gruff is the tactical combat card game of mutated monster goats! Once upon a time, the three Billy-Goats Gruff crossed a bridge and confronted a horrible troll. The goats outsmarted and attacked the troll, knocking him off the bridge and to his doom. This led shepherds to realize that they’d been using their goats all wrong. Instead, they needed to weaponize their herds! In Gruff, you take on the role of one of these shepherds. Use black magic, foul science, and forbidden breeding practices to transform your herd into the ultimate team of battle goats — Gruffs!

Gruff is an evolving card game that comes complete with everything you need to play in one box. No need to purchase multiple copies of the same game to have playsets of the cards you love. Gruff comes with 15 goats, and seven shepherds. Get into the game by choosing three goats and a shepherd. Each goat comes with its own unique deck of 15 cards. Train your herd by choosing eight cards from each goat, then shuffle those together to make a custom deck that suits your play style. You can even add goats and shepherds from the stand-alone expansion Gruff: Clash of the Battle Goats to give you more weapons in your monster goat arsenal!

Gruff lets you engage in almost any type of gameplay style you can imagine. For example, one deck of aggressive goats can make a team that siphons off life to outpace enemy defenses. By swapping out a gruff and tweaking the cards you choose, your team could become an unstoppable, board-controlling colossus! A few more adjustments, and your deck could harness the power of card combos to unleash devastating effects. By using the shuffle-building aspects of the game, it only takes a few seconds to dramatically retune your deck!

Primarily a dueling game for two players, Gruff also supports 2v2 and 4-player free-for-all modes out of a single box. The rules for these modes are available at studiowoe.com. You can even run 4-player draft tournaments, which is the official way that Gruff is played at the Gruff World Championship at GenCon!

In Gruff, you are the shepherd of the Meanest, Weirdest, and Fattest goats that the world has ever seen. Each goat has three stats (Mean, Weird, and Fat) which control their damage output, your resource generation, and their defense. Throughout the game your goats will mutate and evolve, giving them access to stronger stats and crazier abilities!  Your resources grow at an exponential rate leading many games to neck-and-neck finishes with heart-pounding reversals and explosive conclusions.

Gruff uses a special method for resolving attacks, which creates a constant state of attack and counter-play. Combat occurs in three separate lanes, and each goat can only attack the position directly across from them. Additionally, when you attack, your goat does not deal its damage right away. It will take an entire turn for it to charge across the bridge at your enemy (resolving its damage at the start of your next turn). This gives your challenger an opportunity to dodge by moving a defensive goat in the way of the attack, or play ability cards that mitigate your damage. You could even decide to sacrifice the defending goat in order to launch a counter-attack of your own! You can respond to anything opponents throw at you without needing to constantly interrupt that players turn.

With its over-the-top art style and innovative combat mechanics, Gruff is great for anyone that loves highly strategic and tactical games! If you like the idea of visceral shepherd combat with glorious monster goats (who doesn’t?!), then Gruff is the game for you!
