GTM #177 - Planetfall is Authorized!
by Spartan Games

Firestorm Planetfall is an explosive, fast-paced game from Spartan Games that brings ground-pounding, armored combat to the ever-expanding Firestorm Galaxy. In this deadly, hard sci-fi setting, hordes of futuristic tanks, agile aircraft, and hulking mech-walkers tear each other asunder with high-powered weaponry.

Firestorm Planetfall puts wargamers in the role of a Grand Commander, orchestrating the manoeuvres of their chosen army. Forces are composed of Battle Groups, and each of these will in turn contain several Helixes of stunningly-detailed, 10mm-scale miniatures, with models ranging from towering Leviathans to numerous bases of Infantry, all prepared to fight to the last for their Commander.

These planetary invasion forces are formed from troops and vehicles belonging to six core races, who in turn support one of two sides: the Zenian League or the Alliance of Kurak. Each of the six races has its own complex motivations within the conflict, as well as entirely unique vehicles and distinct ways of fighting their battles.

These races include the Terran Alliance, Dindrenzi Federation, Sorylian Collective, Aquan Prime, Directorate, and Relthoza. Gamers will then have the opportunity to supplement these forces with combat units from a range of Allied Races, bringing new and more dangerous technologies to their gaming tables, and allowing for an enormous variety of tactics. These Allied Races include the Terquai, Works Raptor, Hawker Industries, Rense System Navy (RSN), Veydreth, and Tarakians.

~ Building An Army ~

Lots of thought has gone into the way that forces are built by gamers and how they are packaged for retail. Battle Groups are built from what are called Helixes and these take the form of a Core Helix (the beginning of a force), Aerial Helix, Heavy Helix, Assault Helix, Recon Helix, Strike Helix (commonly containing the large Leviathan vehicles) and Support Helix.

These Helixes are color-coded and armies are built by players buying multiple Helixes which bolt together around a Core Helix. It is a simple process to build a force and models are sold in boxes that reflect the Helix approach. As the game develops multiple variants of Helixes will be released for the various Races.

But the flexibility doesn't stop there. The backdrop of the Firestorm Galaxy is about the two great Alliances fighting for control, and as a result Helixes from allied Races can be blended into the forces of gamers. The flexibility this gives gamers for their purchasing is unbridled.

~ The Models ~

Firestorm Planetfall models are highly detailed and adhere to Spartan Games' high manufacturing standards. Premiere-quality resin is used for the vast majority of models, although some minor pewter components are incorporated. The scale of the models are what is commonly referred to as ‘10mm-scale’, but in the case of Firestorm Planetfall this scale has been closely adhered to.

If an Armored Infantry Carrier is supposed to carry 16 heavily armed infantry, the model has been designed to look as if it can actually carry 16 heavily armed infantry. Whilst on the subject of infantry, gamers asked for high-quality, highly detailed infantry and this is what has been delivered with Firestorm Planetfall. Even though this is a game of armored combat, infantry and recon units play a vital role in capturing and securing valuable battlefield objectives.

Additionally, models such as Heavy Tanks that will have a crew of 6-10 and are designed to pack a punch in the game rules are represented in model form by a product that certainly packs a punch. Nothing is held back, detail is everything and quality is assured. With this new game from Spartan Games size really does matter.
Models come on pre-set scenic base sizes: Leviathans 100mm x 100mm, Heavy 100mm x 70mm, Medium 60mm x 40mm, Infantry 40mm x 30mm, Recon 40mm x 30mm and so on. Bases are supplied with all models.

~ Scenery ~

Building a gaming table is an important part of wargaming and as such we have made it as easy as possible for gamers to buy high-quality, durable terrain for Firestorm Planetfall. Not only is there whole series of Terrain Boxes planned, but Terrain components feature in many other products. This can range from a highly detailed resin Objective marker, to several high-quality, pre-printed buildings. Keeping in line with the high-end feel of the gaming miniatures, there is nothing flimsy about our new science fiction Terrain.

~ The Game Engine ~

The gameplay of Firestorm Planetfall is rapid, fluid, and brutal. Emphasis is placed on combined tactics and using the strengths of the various Battle Groups. Aerial Squadrons use speed and firepower to soften up the enemy, while Recon units dash forward to seize objectives which Infantry sections can then dig in and hold. In turn, this allows the heavy hitters to effectively coordinate their attacks; Squadrons of tanks, heavily-armed skimmers, and enormous walkers deliver the killing blow in an unstoppable tide of armour and advanced weaponry.

A fun and flexible game, Firestorm Planetfall can be played quickly and simply with just a dozen tanks and a few supporting vehicles, or it can be expanded right up to a titanic engagement between multiple Battle Groups wrestling for control of whole city sectors, giant planetary defense systems, or sprawling industrial complexes. And the action doesn't stop here – the Firestorm Galaxy is a perfect setting for tense, linked campaigns. By interconnecting a series of Planetfall battles with the exciting spaceship combat game – Firestorm Armada – gamers can determine the fate of entire star systems.
