GTM #171 - Krosmaster Arena: Frigost and Duelpacks
by Japanime Games

Among the six different releases we have coming out over the next four months - Frigost, Multiman, Season 2 Draft Packs, Krosmaster: Junior, the NotMines, Duelpacks, and the foil cards - the most exciting we have coming out is Frigost. Having been wildly successful on Kickstarter, Frigost is the first major extension to Krosmaster: Arena.

The short story is that Jiva, the protector of the month of Javian, used her charm and pushed the Count to get rid of winter using his titanic water clock, a complex combination of mechanical power and magic. But destiny had other plans, and Djaul, the protector of the month of Decendre, cast a curse on the water clock and made it run backwards: instead of getting rid of winter, the whole continent of Frigost was condemned to relive the icy month of Decendre for all eternity! Now, the Demons of the Hours and Minutes have summoned their Krosmasters to the most icy, dangerous world of them all!

But what makes Frigost different? It is completely cross-compatible with Krosmaster: Arena. It has a new double-sided board, but even that is not what makes it stand out. The terrain is both visually and mechanically different in the world of Frigost. Dead Trees and Snowy Fir Trees block line of site, and the ice Geysers are like bushes - impassable and do not block line of sight. In addition, there are Ice Cubes. Like boxes, they increase the range of spells by +1 and are free to move onto. However, an ice cube can be shoved by a krosmaster. When shoved (a 3 action point cost), an ice cube will go in a straight line to the edge of the ice rink. And, if there is a token or Krosmaster on top of that ice cube, they go along with it!

In addition, Frigost has expanded Demon Rewards, which cost a whopping 18 kama. These rewards are advanced and often very much worth the cost, including new equipment for your Krosmasters, as well as some very powerful buffs and spells for your teams to take advantage of. And if that wasn’t enough, frozen damage is very common in Frigost, because of how chilly it is! Frozen damage cannot be healed normally, and it is important to defrost before healing!

Frigost will retail for $45.00 and includes Count Harebourg, the double-sided board, and all of the tokens and terrain needed to play this extension.

Releasing at the same time, Duelpacks are for everyone who’s wanted to try out Krosmaster: Arena, but were gunshy on the price point or investment. The Duelpack’s $20.00 SRP, it is playable as soon as you pick it up. The Duelpack comes with two fantastic characters: Captain Amakna, an Avenger, and the Merkator, a Villain. If we take a look at the cards, you can see Captain Amakna is a pretty good level 6 character. He has 4 movement, 12 health, and 9 action points. Remember, in this game movement and action are independent, so he doesn’t need to use all of one before using the others. He has four spells, two of which can only be used once per turn. Best to use Kickmaster as your first shot, and follow up with Biceps! Using Mocalisation last will allow you to back up and reuse this combo next turn as well. To “Cap” it off (heh. You see what I did there?) he runs resistance to earth and fire spells, which is handy! And, he has a great little power...once you add him to a team of Avengers.

But the real excitement is about Merkator. A Level Six boss with 3 movement, 17 health, and 9 action points, once he gets in nice and close, its all over! The red-backed once-per-game spell on his card will give the use of pulverization twice in the round, at 4 damage per shot, which will easily take out most of Cap’s health. Even though it's in French, that’s a healing spell right there. Very Brutal!

The Duelpack also includes tokens, two dice, a playmat, and complete rules, as well as keycodes so you can enjoy playing these Krosmasters online at www.krosmaster.com. The figures come fully painted and assembled for ease of play and look fantastic right out of the box.

Duelpack will be released with Frigost on May 9th to retail stores in the English market. The Season 2 Draft Packs will be available the end of April. Multiman will be released on June 6th, and Krosmaster Junior, as well as the NotMines will be released on June 11th.
