GTM #171 - Warhammer: Diskwars Expansions
by Fantasy Flight Games

~ The Old World Will Quake! ~

The brutal battles of Warhammer: Diskwars are soon to become even more epic with the introduction of its first two expansions, Legions of Darkness and Hammer and Hold!

Balancing new heroes, troops, command cards, terrain, and tactics for the defenders of Order against those provided to the disciples of Destruction, these expansions allow players to reinforce their Core Set armies or build all-new armies, comprised of regiments from any of six new races: Dwarfs, Wood Elves, Lizardmen, Vampire Counts, Dark Elves, and Skaven. Additionally, each of these new races expands the game with its own distinctive strategies and flavorful, new keywords. Stalwart Dwarfs can fire ranged attacks or trigger focus abilities even while pinned, Lizardmen excel at using Poison to prevent their foes from healing, and the Vampire Counts can both cower their enemies with Fear and call the dead back to battle. When these new units and armies take the battlefield in Warhammer: Diskwars, the Old World will quake!

~ Hammer and Hold ~

“A Dwarf army is like a well-crafted mail shirt; each warrior is an iron-hard link, knitted together by duty, honour, and loyalty. And, like a mail shirt, never a blow shall pass them as long as all the links remain strong.”
    ~ Dwarf saying ~

Hammer and Hold introduces stalwart new heroes and units to bolster the forces of Order. The expansion’s fifty new disks allow you to reinforce your existing Empire and High Elf armies, call up regiments of Wood Elves and Lizardmen, or field a complete Dwarf army, full of heroes, command cards, and grudges!

Along with these disks, and the regiments they can form, come new rules for Poison and the powerful keywords, Guard X and Stalwart.

  • Units with the Poison keyword assign poison tokens to their foes whenever they deal damage in melee or with their ranged attacks. These poison tokens then cause the target’s wounds to fester, preventing it from clearing its damage tokens in the end phase, as well as limiting the effect of any healing or restorative magic.
  • Guard X is the opposite of Impact X, and a unit with Guard X deals X damage to each enemy disk that pins it after a flip.
  • Stalwart allows units to activate to perform ranged attacks or activate focus abilities even while they’re pinned. It’s truly difficult to keep a Stalwart unit pinned for long!

Meanwhile, as Hammer and Hold allows you to forge your own Dwarf army, it allows your Dwarfs to fight in new terrain and to pursue new victory conditions. The expansion comes with a new two-sided terrain piece, featuring a Dwarf Forge and Mine Entrance, as well as a new scenario that allows you to battle along the subterranean pathways connecting the battlefield’s terrain pieces.

~ Legions of Darkness ~

“And they will rise from their graves to march upon the world of the living. Each and every mortal that falls will swell their numbers until only a world of darkness remains. Only then will the world know of the eternal order that lies within the peace of Undeath.”
~ Taken from The Grimoire Necronium, chapter XII, The book of Wsoran ~

Legions of Darkness introduces a terrifying array of fifty-one new heroes and units, as well as new command cards and other resources designed to bolster the game’s forces of Destruction. The Dark Elves and Skaven each gain a hero and enough units to form a regiment, but the expansion’s most fearsome threat comes in the form of its new Vampire Counts heroes and units, as well as the Fear and Reanimate X keywords they bear.

  • Units with Fear sow panic among their foes, limiting their abilities to fight back. So long as a unit with Fear is pinning an enemy, the panicked foe’s counterattack value becomes one.
  • As a focus ability, your unit with Reanimate X can choose an undead disk in your casualty pile and reinforce it onto the battlefield completely within short range. The size of the disk that you can reanimate depends upon the value of X. It reinforces without an activation token, but instead receives a reanimate token and is returned to the casualty pile during the end phase.

Among the Legions of Darkness, you’ll also find potent reinforcements for your Orc and Chaos armies. As the game’s first Goblin units fling themselves into battle with utter abandon, the daemonic Chaos hordes are reinforced by Slaanesh’s Daemonettes and Tzeentch’s fearsome packs of Screamers. New command cards, terrain, and scenarios further ensure that you’ll find plenty of opportunities to drive your enemies to their knees!

~ New Armies March to War ~

Whether you choose to reinforce existing armies or make all-new armies for the Dwarfs or Vampire Counts, the Hammer and Hold and Legions of Darkness expansions for Warhammer: Diskwars will soon fill the game’s battles with more units, more heroes, more necromancy, and more grudges.

Will you stand with the forces of Order, or help the forces of Destruction burn the Old World to ashes? The choice is yours!
