The industry has been buzzing about Redakai since its release by Spin Master in June this year. The game made a huge splash at GenCon, where players were lining up to get a demo and see just what this new TCG is all about. With unique card design and gameplay, there’s a reason why everyone is talking about Redakai! But don’t think Redakai is all gimmick – its gameplay has plenty of strategic depth, and is supported by a robust Organized Play program that is going to get even bigger in 2012!
Redakai Gameplay
When Spin Master started working on Redakai, they knew that technology alone wouldn’t make for a great game. So they brought in a team of accomplished TCG professionals like Justin Gary, John Fiorillo, and Brian Kibler. They designed a game engine that can be learned in ten minutes, but provides strategic depth that supports tournament play.
Using the Kairu resource system, players damage opposing characters by stacking attacks, while stacking monsters onto their own characters for powerful bonuses. As games progress, the cards become more powerful, and decision points are plentiful. The game is easy enough for an eight year old to play, but complex enough for a grizzled TCG veteran to feel challenged. This dynamic has led to many experienced TCG players picking up the game, and enjoying it with their children. Kids can keep up with parents, and the family can play in tournaments together for the next challenge!
Organized Play
Hobby stores across North America currently run League events for the game, highlighted by exclusive promo cards given to participants and winners. Scores are tracked on the Leaderboards at Redakai.com, so players can accumulate points for bragging rights. Going into 2012, there are even more exciting events planned! Over the next few months Redakai will be issuing Kairu Challenges all across the country with local, Regional, and National tournament events! Organized Play is taking a huge step up in 2012 as all of North America competes in our tournament level of play.
Players had a sneak peak at these tournament plans during the first ever Redakai Championship at Gen Con 2011. Benji Cuyugan played his Gold Control deck to victory, taking home an iPad and the first ever Championship trophy. More premiere events will be held in 2012, giving players a higher level of competition to test their skill and win prizes.
Joining organized play is easy. A directory of stores hosting events can be found on the Redakai website: Redakai.com. All a player has to do is attend an event, sign up for a league ID card, and start playing for promos and leaderboard points!
Metacharged
Players can expect multiple releases for Redakai each year. Spin Master launched its first Redakai expansion, Metacharged, on October 15. Metacharged is a whole new set of cards, and features the new “Metacharge” keyword. When you play a monster, your cards with Metacharge gain devastating special abilities.
A great example of a Metcharged attack is “Baoddai’s Wisdom”, pictured here.

Spend 8 Kairu energy, and you can inflict 2 damage and block out 2 defense zones. This X-Drive gets even better if you’ve played a monster this turn. Doing so activates the Metacharge ability and lets you draw 3 cards, adding a game-changing arsenal of monsters and attacks to your hand. |

Activating the Metacharged keyword can be made easier by including monsters like Circuits, Blue Elemental in your deck. Circuits only costs one Kairu energy to play, plus he gives you additional energy if you play more monsters, so you should have plenty of juice to power all those Metacharged attacks! |
What’s in Store for the Future
Future sets promise to provide more strategic depth, while the Organized Play program continues to provide opportunities for every level of player – from casual to the highest levels of competition. Redakai is geared up to be the “next big thing”, and has plenty to offer even the most serious gamers!
