GTM #184 - DC Dice Masters: War of Light
by WizKids/NECA

The heroes and villains of the DC Comics universe are returning to Dice Masters in the upcoming DC Comics Dice Masters: War of Light. War of Light focuses on a more “galactic” feel, featuring space-faring heroes such as Lantern Corps members Atrocious and Larfleeze. Of course, DC Comics fan-favorites like Atom, Batman, Wonder Woman, and The Flash are returning with different Lantern Power Rings of their own! Some fan-favorite Green Lanterns will be making their first appearance in Dice Masters as well, so get ready for Jade, Kilowog, Mogo, and more. Comic book fans that prefer keeping things slightly less colorful will be glad to know that the Teen Titans are also joining the battle in full force with Beast Boy, Raven, Starfire, and Wonder Girl. Each character will have multiple versions, so players can include their favorites into a strategy that suits them.

A unique characteristic of the War of Light is that every single character card in the set will be tied to a Lantern Corps or team, introducing a new level of interaction between characters. The unique emphasis on Lanterns and how they work with each other offers players all-new team-building choices. Should you concentrate on a single affiliation or incorporate every color of the Emotional Spectrum? For each path players take, there are synergies to consider and counters to fear. For example, while "Batman: Instills Great Fear" may gain significant benefits for fighting alongside Sinestro… being in the company of a villain carries its own risks that players must take into account. With countless great team combinations, every single game can be a fresh and exciting experience.

War of Light provides a rich comic book feel for players by making the most of the various interactions between the Lantern Corps. Blue Lanterns benefit from Green Lanterns. Red Lanterns lash out against Green Lanterns. The Indigo Tribe works together. Orange Lanterns demonstrate the greed that fans of the comics have come to expect of them. But just like in the comics, the coolest and most exciting moments come from the various Lanterns working together. Utilizing the full emotional spectrum will allow players to field tons of dice, have a robust defense, sneak characters into play, deal massive damage - and that’s only the beginning! What else? How about having Wonder Woman empowering Sidekicks, and Batman making use of every tool available to him to defeat his enemies? War of Light isn’t just about the Lantern Corps., so players need to pay attention to those “non-Lanterns” for their added skills and boosts throughout a Dice Masters match.

The strategic diversity gained from mixing and matching affiliations and Lantern Corps makes DC Comics Dice Masters: War of Light a terrific Dice Masters set for veteran and newcomer players looking for not only an intro to the DC-themed Dice Masters games, but also for players looking to expand their existing dice collections with the beloved Lantern Corps. friends and foes. Those starting their collections will find a satisfying amount of depth with just a Starter Set ($19.99 MSRP) and a few foil packs ($.99 MSRP).

It’s only fitting that War of Light is a great set for a Rainbow Draft as well.  While players draft their cards one by one, they will be assembling a team completely different from the ones they will be facing. Each card pick presents an opportunity to improve your team or undermine your opponent’s. Many cohesive draft teams exist at the common and uncommon level for an exciting play experience, whether you want to play Lanterns, Villains, Teen Titans, or just the cards and dice that come your way. Going into a War of Light Rainbow Draft, anybody could emerge as the winner!

As always, everything in War of Light is compatible with previous Dice Masters sets, allowing players to incorporate new mechanics into their current game and give it new life. Energy is no longer just a resource used to pay for dice and abilities. Energy can now activate cards like "Lantern Battery: Speak the Oath", just from being saved in the Reserve Pool. This encourages clever team building that makes the most out of all resources. Pair these abilities with Global Abilities to spend the energy afterward to squeeze out an extra advantage. Claiming victory always requires both skill and good luck, but now each roll presents even more options and rewards adaptability like never before.

We would be remiss if we talked about new mechanics, but didn’t mention the Black Lanterns. The Black Lantern Aquaman, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman characters slowly eat away at both players and reward the one who can adapt best. "Black Lantern Aquaman: From the Depths" will be especially rewarding to players with an extreme disdain for Sidekick dice. With no card to return to, Sidekicks are instead completely banished from the game. By removing all of the starter dice from the game, every single roll can be comprised exclusively of powerful character and ability dice. However, players must balance using these dice against spending them in order to replace what is being lost.

Experienced players looking to boost their old favorites will not be disappointed by DC Comics Dice Masters: War of Light either. Cards like "Warth: Hope Burns Bright", provide support for some of the classic Dice Masters powerhouses in a way that has never been seen before. When paired with the right ally, Warth can make a bigger splash than any other character in his price range. Even common cards like "Lyssa Drak: Keeper of the Book Parallax" can have a unique and meaningful impact on the game. Her unique blend of blocker and Used Pile manipulation has never been seen before. It all comes in a low-cost package as well.

Those looking to introduce a lot of new faces into their constructed play may look to "Kyle Rayner: Hopeful Will". He starts off humbly enough, but it won’t take long before he assembles a full-fledged Lantern Corps to pound down the opposition. Teams too concerned with previous Dice Masters sets may not be prepared for the full array of Power Ring wielders Kyle Rayner will be bringing behind him. Players must decide if they wish to specifically punish a heavy dependence on a single Lantern Corps, or if they prefer to face it down with their trusted methods.

With over 140 cards and 40 characters to choose from, there’s something for everyone in DC Comics Dice Masters: War of Light. So get ready to wage epic dice battles involving iconic characters. Grab a friend and play on your kitchen table, or head to your local game store and meet other players. DC Comics Dice Masters: War of Light is a terrific, head-to-head experience that should not be missed.
